Culture and History
A Journey to Ise Jingu, which has coexisted with the local community for over 2,000 years.
Explore the lasting traces of “omotenashi”—the spirit of hospitality that lives on in the Ise pilgrimage.
After immersing yourself in the sacred atmosphere of Ise Jingu, embark on a special journey that traces the unique hospitality culture of “omotenashi,” a tradition passed down for generations in this sacred region. In the past, it was said that one in six Japanese people made the pilgrimage here. By exploring iseshima, a place that has welcomed countless travelers since antiquity, you can connect with its rich history and feel the spirit of hospitality that lives on to this very day.
Ise Jingu Geku Pilgrimage + Sengukan Museum (75 min)
The Geku is a serene sanctuary set within a dignified forest, where Toyouke-Omikami, the deity of food, clothing, and housing, is enshrined. The tradition of Shikinen Sengu—the complete rebuilding of the shrine every 20 years—has been kept alive here for approximately 1,300 years. At the on-site Sengukan Museum, you can explore this history, learn about the artisans’ skills, and see an impressive, full-scale model of the main sanctuary.

Oharaimachi, located in front of the Naiku, is a walking street stretching 800 meters along the Isuzugawa River, lined with souvenir shops and restaurants. Halfway down the street, Okage Yokocho features 55 shops, including the famous Akafuku main store, where you can enjoy local cuisine and traditional crafts through food tours and shopping. The streets, with their buildings relocated and restored from the Edo period (17th-19th century) to the Meiji era (late 19th-early 20th century), allow you to experience the unique culture and lively atmosphere of Ise, with festivals, taiko drum performances, and more.
Please note that you are responsible for paying for all meals and facility admission fees within Oharaimachi and Okage Yokocho. Please also be aware that some facilities may have irregular closing days.
Ise Jingu Naiku Pilgrimage (90 min)
The Naiku of Ise Jingu is the Kotai Jingu, which enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, the ancestral deity of the Imperial Family and the guardian of the Japanese people. There are only two main sanctuaries — the Naiku and Geku — and the tradition of Shikinen Sengu, where the shrine buildings are completely rebuilt every 20 years, has been practiced for about 1,300 years. Cross the Ujibashi Bridge, purify your spirit in the clear waters of the Isuzugawa River, and walk the gravel path to enter the sacred grounds. Here, you can experience the traditional Japanese landscape often referred to as the nation’s “spiritual home.”
Futami Okitama Shrine (Wedded Rocks) (30 min)
Futami Okitama Shrine is a seaside shrine dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami, a deity believed to bring good luck and household safety. The Wedded Rocks in front of the shrine serve as a torii gate for worshipping the sacred stone Okitama Shinseki and the sun deity in the distance. Their joined appearance has made them a popular symbol of marriage and strong relationships. In the past, this was a place for the purification ritual Hamasangu before the Ise pilgrimage. Today, visitors can perform a similar purification ritual called Mukushio-harai. The shrine grounds are also known for the Futami frogs that have been offered to the shrine, and on the 23rd of every month, a special commemorative goshuin (stamp obtained from Shinto shrines) is available for visitors.
